ABOUT THE TALK AND SPEAKERS
Partnering with Johnson & Johnson
(12.00 pm - 12.45 pm)
Dr. Liz Jazwinska PhD, MBA, the Executive Director for New Business & Strategic Alliances of Johnson & Johnson Research Pte Ltd (J&J) in Australia will talk about having the partner of choice, and working effectively with its partners to improve healthcare for generations to come while achieving J&J's and partners' common business goals.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE SPEAKER
Liz Jazwinska PhD, MBA
Executive Director New Business & Strategic Alliances
Johnson & Johnson Research Pte Ltd
Sydney, Australia
Dr Liz Jazwinska joined Johnson & Johnson Research Pte Limited (JJR) in
2002. Her primary responsibilities in JJR are to identify and evaluate new
business opportunities in the Asia Pacific Region for partnering with Johnson &
Johnson (J&J) global companies. The main focus of partnering is support for the
J&J global pharmaceutical sector, this includes licencing of new chemical
entities, chemical libraries and biotechnology platform technologies, research
collaborations and outsourcing. In addition, Liz can facilitate links with the
medical devices and consumer sectors of J&J to enable companies in the Asia
Pacific region to take their products to the global market place. Prior to
joining JJR, Liz held a number of positions in the academic sector and
pharmaceutical industry, including Business Development Manager in the
Technology Transfer Office of the University of Sydney, Assistant Director in
Human Genetics and Pharmacogenetics in SmithKline Beecham (now GSK) in the UK
and Senior Research Fellow in Human Genetics at the Queensland Institute of
Medical Research. During her academic career Liz authored 62 publications in
peer-reviewed journals and continues to act as an expert reviewer for
international molecular and medical journals and science funding agencies. In
addition she is closely involved with Australian Research Council (ARC), the
major science funding agency in Australia, as a past member and Chair of the ARC
College of Experts in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and a current member
of the ARC Federation Fellowship Selection committee and the ARC Advisory
Council.
Proven Product Engine for Quickly Inventing Novel Clinical Drug Candidates or Repositioned Marketed Drugs
(12.45 pm - 1.30 pm)
Dr. Jay J. Wu, Ph.D will share about the latest technologies from VM
Discovery and the emerging market trends in this field.
VM Discovery is a Silicon-Valley based biotech company focused on inventing and
commercializing differentiated novel small-molecules drug candidates and
repositioned marketed drugs to treat cancer, pain and other human diseases. The
company's drug candidates are all invented in-house targeting difficult but
validated or most-sought-after drug targets (e.g. ion channels, protein-protein
interactions, and lipid proteins) associated with large unmet market including
peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy, cardiovascular diseases, in addition to pain
and cancer. VMD has strong pipeline of differentiated drug candidates in
development, outstanding operational efficiency, and fast cycle-time in
inventing optimized drug candidates with its proven product engine, the "VMOptimizerSM".
For example, one molecule VMD designed for an US-based biopharmaceutical
company, VMD-30283 has been able to enter combined Phase I/II clinical trials
within 18 months as first-in-class drug candidate to treat heart attacks.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE SPEAKER
Jay J. Wu, Ph.D.
President & CEO, VM Discovery, Inc., California, USA
Adjunct Professor, University of the Pacific, California, USA
Dr. Jay J. Wu, Ph.D. is Founder, President and CEO of VM Discovery, Inc.
He has spent over 20 years in molecular design and simulation in chemical and
biological systems and drug discovery, and at least two molecules he designed
have been entered in human clinical trials (I/II) for treatments of cancer and
cardiovascular diseases. He was founding Director of Computational Modeling at
Camitro (acquired by ArQule), responsible for R&D of drug design and
computational predictive models for the pharmacokinetics and ADME/Tox
properties. He previously held positions, as Director, Manager of Molecular
Modeling at NaviCyte, (acquired by) Trega Biosciences (subsequently acquired by
Lion Biosciences), and at Simulations Plus, Inc., all in USA. He earned his
Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and M.S. and B.S.
from Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Dr. Wu currently has also an
appointment as Adjunct Professor, Pharmaceuticals and Medicinal Chemistry at
University of the Pacific, California, USA. Approx. 20+ peer-reviewed
publications and, 8+ patents (or applications) as first or sole inventor of
various small-molecule drug candidates.
