Overview

As A*STAR's Research Scientists and Engineers, your research and discoveries are of great significance to the academic and business community. Exploit Technologies works closely with you to maximise the potential of your discoveries through research collaboration and technology transfer. Why you should protect your intellectual property:

  • It becomes difficult to protect the originality of your work once you disclose it (paper, website, or presentation at a conference). If the market for your invention is global, this is an important consideration as you plan disclosures.
  • After disclosure, your invention is no longer patentable in most jurisdictions.
  • After filing a patent application, you can disclose your work without the loss of patent protection for the subject matter in the application.
  • Patents provide a strong economic incentive for a company to license A*STAR technology. Patents give A*STAR the right to exclude others from practicing the invention for a period. This period of exclusivity presents a barrier to entry to other companies.
  • Some technologies(typically software, educational materials, multimedia presentations, etc.) lend itself to copyright protection. In this case, copyright protection is provided at creation, but we may also elect under certain circumstances to register the copyright with Patent and Trademark Office.
