Final day, final crowds
Posted By : Alfred on 18 Jun 2010, 07:02pm Comments (0)

I turned up at the A*Star booth just an hour before the end of CommunicAsia 2010, and surprisingly, there was a sizeable crowd of people checking out the exhibits.

Most participants didn't shy away from checking out the virtual football game, having a swing at things to soak in the World Cup fever. Others danced with a virtual partner that grooved to their moves at the Read Full Post »

CommunicAsia 2010 Day 3: Crowds still come

Usually, the last couple of days of a trade show will see thinner crowds as visitors complete their tours of the booths they have not had a chance to check out previously.

At CommunicAsia 2010, however, the third day of the event proved just as eventful for a number of participants at the A*Star booth.

In particular, the I2R folks behind the Maritime Mobile Mesh Network (Mobile MMN) said they got a number of enquiries from Indonesian shipping firms regarding their shipbound broadband technology.

Most existing shipboard technologies require ships to travel near the coast to tap on wireless communications networks on...

CommunicAsia 2010 Day 2: Recognise that face?
Posted By : Alfred on 16 Jun 2010, 07:38pm Comments (0)

Day 2 at CommunicAsia saw a number of reporters come visit the A*Star booth at Hall 3, checking out the homegrown technologies from the various labs.

Among them was Raju Chellam, long-time journalist and now contributer to The Business Times' BizIT tech pages.

Others who dropped by included Mediacorp's Today newspaper in the morning, as well as respected enterprise IT outlet ZDNet Asia. As with last year, there is no shortage of media interest in A*Star's exhibits despite the modest booth.

Among the technologies the folks from the media checked out, I'm sure a couple of the...

CommunicAsia preview #2: Dance! 3D
Posted By : Alfred on 14 Jun 2010, 05:05pm Comments (0)

Ever thought of asking a girl (or guy) for a dance while out clubbing but were afraid your moves don't cut it?

Well, there's now a way to prepare at home before heading out with confidence, thanks to a new dance analysis technology that lets your practise with a virtual partner as if you were on a dance floor.

Called Dance! 3D, the system simulates a dance floor by having a virtual partner, in the shape of whatever character you fancy, move along with your own moves on a screen before you.

The character will respond to what you do, say, if...

Posted By : Alfred on 11 Jun 2010, 03:51pm Comments (0)

Every once in four years, the annual CommunicAsia show in June will coincide with the biggest sporting event ever - the World Cup.

So, as the month-long football fiesta kicks off tonight, what better way to start our series of CommunicAsia previews than with a football game that makes use of A*Star's gesture-based technologies?

In the next few days, as we run up to next Tuesday's CommunicAsia infocomm trade show, I'll be updating you on the new technologies that have been baked for a while in the labs of A*Star and now ready to be shown to the public.

As with...

May 2010 wrapup: Research into anti-bodies alternatives as Fujitsu Laboratories opens in Singapore
Posted By : Alfred on 9 Jun 2010, 10:42am Comments (0)

Speak of Fujitsu and most people in Singapore would think of laptops or other home electronics. Unknown to many folks here, the Japanese conglomerate is also a big player in bio-medical research.

And that is an area it will be focusing on in Singapore, after it opened a new bio-medical research lab here in Singapore last month.

Fujitsu Laboratories Singapore, unveiled last month by Fujitsu Laboratories, Fujitsu Asia and A*STAR on May 19, will focus on the use of aptamer technologies for use in healthcare.

Aptamers have been seen of late as an alternative to the widely-used antibody in the diagnostics...

RFID tags offer transparency

It used to be a tedious business. Counting hundreds of wooden pallets and, worse, having to resolve a dispute with a customer after the numbers do not tally, were common tasks for the staff of Kim Hiap Lee Co. (KHL).

The Singapore company rents out the wooden pallets to a wide range of customers, including distributors who use it to transport cartons of goods and even circus acts requiring solid ground to build tents ...

A chat with local entrepreneurs from Knorex

Searching the Internet is a task that we take for granted today with the ease and speed with which Google and other search engines return useful results for restaurants, people and places.

But what if you wanted to look for something deeper or more specific?

It is easy to look for news about pirate attacks off the Straits of Malacca, for example. But can you mine the data for more useful insights into the situation, for example, to study which types of ships are usually attacked and at what time?

This deeper search and analysis is what local startup Knorex aims...
